The New Orleans Pelicans’ season, already a disaster, hit another low on Friday. Zion Williamson, the face of the franchise, was suspended for one game due to a violation of team policies after being late for Thursday’s flight to Philadelphia. Adding well, injury to injury, forward Herb Jones is sidelined indefinitely with a posterior labrum tear in his right shoulder.
Zion’s suspension is not just about one instance of tardiness—it’s the culmination of repeated offenses. Head coach Willie Green explained, “There were several occasions that led up to this, and that’s how we got to this decision.”
This latest incident has reignited criticism about Williamson’s professionalism and work ethic, which have been recurring issues since he was drafted first overall in 2019. Concerns about his conditioning, diet, and dedication to the game have lingered for years. Critics have pointed to his perceived lack of discipline as a contributing factor to his injury history and limited availability.
In a statement, Williamson took accountability for his actions. “I take full responsibility for this suspension. I’ve worked extremely hard in rehab to get healthy to deliver for this team. There is no excuse for being late to team activities. I have apologized to [Pelicans owner] Mrs. [Gayle] Benson and my teammates and coaches, and I also owe an apology to the fans. I can and will be better as a teammate and member of this organization.”
Executive vice president of basketball operations David Griffin accepted Zion’s apology while emphasizing the importance of maintaining team standards. “This one-game suspension is a result of failing to meet our team standards,” he said. “His dedication to this organization is of paramount significance to us and to him. He has taken accountability for his actions and reaffirmed that commitment to the team today. I’m confident he will continue to evolve positively on and off the floor.”
Earlier in the afternoon, the Pelicans announced the loss of Herb Jones, who is dealing with a posterior labrum tear in his right shoulder. Jones has been New Orleans’ defensive anchor since joining the team in 2020 and is averaging 10.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.9 steals per game. This is the second time this season that shoulder issues have sidelined him, and his absence leaves a glaring hole in one of the NBA’s worst defenses.
Fans have every reason to be frustrated. At this point, frustration left town weeks ago. It’s just another card in the collection of one of the most disappointing seasons in franchise history.
Zion’s recent return from a 27-game absence due to a hamstring injury showed his typical flashes of brilliance, including his signature 360-windmill dunk against Minnesota earlier this week. How long, though, will the Pelicans continue to bet on Zion Williamson’s talent?
As the team looks ahead to Sunday’s game against Boston, the hope is that this suspension will serve as a wake-up call for Zion. His talent is undeniable, but without a stronger commitment to being a professional, Williamson won’t ever maximize his abilities or fulfill his career’s potential. For now, Pelicans fans can only hope that Zion and the rest of the team can regroup, refocus, and make something out of this dreadful campaign.
