Pelicans waive pair, Trey Murphy gives injury update

The New Orleans Pelicans made a pair of roster moves on Thursday as they released forward Matt Ryan and guard Adonis Arms.

Both players had non-guaranteed training camp contracts, meaning there will be no impact on the Pelicans’ salary cap.

Ryan had been productive in limited minutes for the Pelicans. He appeared in 28 games for New Orleans during the 2023-24 season, shooting 45.1% from three-point range while averaging 5.4 points per game. On Monday afternoon, he was 0-3 in eight minutes against the Orlando Magic.

According to NBA reporter Keith Langlois, Ryan could land with the Detroit Pistons. The Pistons are first in waiver order and have an open roster spot. Pistons general manager Trajan Langdon had the same role with the Pelicans last season and claimed Ryan when he was waived by the Minnesota Timberwolves last October.

Arms signed an Exhibit 10 deal with the Pelicans on October 1 after two seasons as a G League standout. He played for the Memphis Hustle last season, averaging 16.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 3.1 assists. Arms played for the Sacramento Kings during Summer League, averaging 20.7 points and 6.7 rebounds.

He went undrafted out of Texas Tech in 2022 and had stints with the Denver Nuggets, Phoenix Suns, and Memphis Grizzlies. Arms will likely be headed to Birmingham to play with the Pelicans’ G League affiliate. He will be eligible for a bonus of up to $77.5 thousand if he spends at least 60 days with the Squadron.

Trey Murphy Injury Update

Trey Murphy spoke about the status of his injured right hamstring following practice on Thursday. Murphy will not be in the lineup on Opening Night for the second straight season.

“Obviously not starting the season (healthy) again hurts me a lot,” Murphy said. “I was just trying to do everything I can summer-wise to be prepared for the season, then to have something like that happen, it really sucks. But I’m putting it in perspective – it could be a lot worse. The good thing is it’s an NBA season; I’ll be there for a majority of it.”

Murphy is scheduled to be re-examined on October 24. He missed the first 19 games of the 2023-24 season with a knee injury that required offseason surgery. The Pelicans need him on the floor much sooner this season.

At this stage, Murphy has no definitive timeline for when he will make his season debut. “With hamstrings, you never know what’s going to happen, or how your body is going to respond,” he said. “You just have to respect the tissue and whatever my body tells me, I’ll be able to relay to the rest of the team.”

His current regimen is limited to standstill shooting drills and weightlifting.

Murphy should be a major part of the Pelicans’ new emphasis on raising their volume from three-point range. In his career, “Trigga” has made 442 of his 1128 attempts from behind the arc, including 371 in the last two seasons.
