The New Orleans Pelicans lost more than a game on Tuesday night against the Golden State Warriors. The Pelicans will go into Wednesday night’s rematch down without two more of their top rotation players.
CJ McCollum and Herb Jones will be in street clothes as the Pelicans try to put an end to their two-game losing streak. Jordan Hawkins is questionable to play.
New Orleans lost by 18 to the Warriors with McCollum, Jones, and Hawkins, so evening the season series and ending the road trip on a high note has become exponentially more difficult.
The Pelicans gave a memorable performance for all of the wrong reasons on Tuesday, as they had more turnovers (24) than three-point attempts (22). New Orleans gave up 34 points on those mistakes. The Pelicans were also destroyed in transition (22-6).
Zion Williamson (31) and Brandon Ingram (30) combined for 61 points, but the Warriors’ defense seemed content to allow them to score while eliminating the rest of the team as viable offensive options.
The Pelicans have defensive issues to be corrected, but their offense has gotten worse each game this season. Without Dejounte Murray or an offensive philosophy, they have severe problems on that side of the ball.
Head coach Willie Green has preached “next man up” time and time again. Tonight is an opportunity for those next men to prove their value in a significant, early-season matchup. Win or lose, the Pelicans have to show some pride against a Warriors team that played like champions last night even without their MVP.
